004 Energetic Disruptions

Hello and welcome back. This is week 4 of the newsletter and it’s the final installment of what I’ve informally (in my head) called the “So embodiment means what, exactly?” series. Hopefully it's helped you gain a basic understanding of what embodiment actually is, how you can start to explore it, and why it’s such a big deal.

Starting next week, things will become a little less formal and a little less dense.

In week 3, I talked about common issues people run into when they first experiment with embodiment practices.


This week I explain why most people are in dire need of embodiment. That’s because, among other things, it helps us address and resolve a wide variety of chronic physical, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual issues.

And, as I explained in week 2, persistent issues can be rooted at a deeper level than the symptoms. That deeper level is the energy field and the roots are what I collectively call energetic disruptions.

Energetic Disruptions

Part 1: Resisted  "What you resist, persists"

Let’s face it. We dislike discomfort. In fact, most of our daily effort is spent seeking what feels good and avoiding what doesn’t. When something lousy sneaks in, we have endless ways (distraction, deflection, drugs, etc) to reduce our suffering.

But there’s a problem...

Part 2: Redirected

That’s because our strategy reduces our conscious experience of discomfort but not it’s effect. When an experience is repressed or rejected, it is stored as a disruption in our energy field.

It’s like hitting the pause button.

You see, our experiences have an energetic charge to them. Once they’ve entered our field they have to run their course before they can exit. Turning away simply puts them on pause and stores their energy in our system. 

And, since we resist when the quality of the energy is something we don’t like, we’ve actually done ourselves a disservice.

But that’s ok. This doesn’t happen consciously. What we resist is a product of our conditioning - the environment we grew up in, our gender, skin color, sexual orientation, perceived strengths, weaknesses, and much more.

And though we go through this process everyday, the ones that really shape our lives are the big moments. To quote my own website ;)

"The greater the negative experience (trauma, chronic stressors, serious accident or injury) the greater the energetic disruption and resulting tension. Each energetic disruption increases the likelihood and magnitude of further disruptions. If they're not addressed, the tension accumulates and eventually bubbles back into our consciousness as increasingly debilitating stress. In turn, chronic stress becomes a precursor for chronic pain, chronic illnesses and–in my experience–makes a person more vulnerable to emotional and physical injury."

Well geez.

Part 3: Revealed   “You have to feel it to heal it”

But wait!!

There’s a brief moment, when a disruption has just occured, that we’re still conscious of it. If we’re paying attention, we can address the energy by allowing it to move through and out of us.

For example, animals who have just faced a life-threatening event will literally shake out the fear and survival energy from their bodies soon as they’re safe.. 

If we’re embodied we can do the same thing: Shake, cry, yawn, stretch, fight back - whatever’s required to allow and release the energy. 

But if we’re not embodied, we miss that window and the energetic disruption moves to our subconscious. We’re no longer aware that it’s there but we feel its effects.

That’s why embodiment is so important. 

First, you have the skills to work with challenging situations in real time. This makes you a much happier, steadier, and effective human in general.

Second, you can find the disruptions that are deep in your system which drive your chronic issues. You literally shine your consciousness, like a flashlight, into the previously dark and inaccessible parts of your subconscious. 


Part 4: Released  “The only way out is through”

If you’re embodied enough to find the disruption, you’re halfway there. 

Then, if you shine your consciousness on the disruption long enough, the old experience (or, rather, its energetic charge) is reactivated. Don’t worry -  that’s a good thing. 

Unlike the first time, you’re now in a safe setting and you have the necessary skills and wisdom to handle the discomfort safely.

When you focus your awareness on the energetic charge - without judgement, resistance, or any attempt to control it - you stimulate the body’s ability to express and release it. Simply by witnessing and allowing the experience to play out, you have freed yourself of its burden.

Hurray!

And here’s a little sneak peak: Over time, as you clean out the past disruptions in your system and get better at working with the new ones, you discover that difficult experiences are not actually a burden at all. How and why is a topic for another time.

FYI: I was supposed to include a video today about why disruptions don't always budge when we observe them. However, life and the wisdom of my body implore me to give myself a break and get to it next week.
