023 If you’re struggling right now…read this
Hello friends,
Well, it’s winter in the northern hemisphere and, whether you’re in a warm or cold climate, you can probably feel it. Even here in Los Angeles, the change in temperature, the angle/length of light, etc. are unmistakable.
Often, the winter season elicits our own, personal winter. We might find our levels of energy are lower and we’re less motivated to act. And our focus may turn inwards, towards contemplation and preparation for the year ahead.
For many, inner-winter brings heaviness: Depression, stress, pain, and an increase in symptoms from chronic illness.
This combination of cold, darkness, and inner struggle can bring profound hopelessness.
And while I can relate (see the last section of this email for a snippet of my own health journey), I also recognize inner-winter as the most potent season for healing.
For that reason, I offer this email – a clear-eyed message of hope during the darkest time of year.
You can heal
Your body wants to heal. It wants to heal you – physically, emotionally, cognitively, and spiritually. It can do that, all of that, if you let it.
And your body is always ready. It’s ready to release the tension that’s keeping you sick, hurt, depressed, anxious, or fixated. And it knows exactly what’s required to release that tension. It knows what needs to be expressed, how to express it, and the conditions that are necessary for the process to unfold.
It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been struggling, how many issues you have, or how dire your present circumstances are. Your body is 100% ready to heal you, right now, if you let it.
How?
By aligning your mind with your body. By quieting your mind and listening deeply to messages your body is sending.
The obstacle
The reason we don’t heal is because we resist – consciously and subconsciously – the messages and instructions our bodies are sending us.
I’m talking about the difficult emotions, physical feelings, and thoughts that our body puts forward. These are the feelings and thoughts we consider unacceptable, immature, unfair, shameful, or unsafe.
We assume these feelings are bad. We assume their presence means that something is wrong.
In fact, as soon as one of these feelings or thoughts arise, we start the following process:
Explanation - Why is this happening?
Interpretation - What does this mean about me and/or others?
Escape - What can I do to make this feeling or thought go away?
The process begins so quickly, we don’t even recognize it’s happening. It’s an instantaneous resistance, and it’s based on a complete mistrust of our body and its messages.
And once it begins, it’s very difficult to stop. The feelings and thoughts become locked in a cycle, pulling us through the process over and over again:
explanation, interpretation, escape, explanation, interpretation, escape, explanation…
Breaking the habit
Of course, we don’t know we’re resisting. Our resistance is a habit, a deeply ingrained and largely subconscious habit that’s been utilized and reinforced for years, if not decades.
We didn’t choose this habit. It was taught to us by our families and cultures, or we developed it instinctively to protect ourselves in unsafe conditions.
You’re here now, alive and reading this because of your habit. It helped keep you safe in the past. There’s reason to be thankful for your old habit, but an even stronger reason to evolve beyond it.
How? How do you evolve beyond a habit that’s so strong and deeply rooted in the subconscious?
By building a new one – a habit based on something more powerful, compelling, and helpful than your wounds and conditioning.
I’m talking about the habit of trusting your body and all of its messages: Every physical sensation, emotion, thought, and intuitive knowing.
And yes, that includes the messages you’ve spent your life fighting against: Pain, fear, anger, shame, grief, fatigue, repetitive intrusive thoughts, etc.
From this new perspective, everything the body puts forward is trustworthy and designed to help you heal.
That includes anything that used to feel like a threat, or an indication that something was wrong…those are now the keys to your healing.
Any feeling or thought that you believed was unacceptable, unfair, shameful, or unsafe…they are now the fuel for your healing.
Please take note: I’m not telling you to believe every thought that enters your head. I’m asking you to trust their presence.
A new perspective
When it comes to healing, it actually doesn’t matter what you’re thinking or feeling. What matters is how you relate to what you’re thinking and feeling.
From this perspective, there are no good or bad thoughts, no good or bad feelings.
Instead, if you allow your thoughts and feelings to be present without resistance (and, dare I say, with trust), your body will do its work: Express, process, release….express, process, release.
It’s that simple, really.
Using this method, I’ve healed myself from countless chronic injuries, fibromyalgia, severe allergies, crippling anxiety and depression, many emotional traumas, and a complete inability to maintain a romantic relationship.
These issues ruled my life for over two decades. I was often unemployed, uninsured, and out of money. I was regularly told by doctors and master practitioners that 1) they’d never seen such a severe case in their career and 2) they didn’t know if I could heal.
But I did, and so can you.
Seeking guidance
We all need help in our healing journeys. We need guidance from people who have walked the very path we’re learning to walk for ourselves.
Even though these old patterns exist in our subconscious, we can work with them. We can learn to make the unconscious conscious and create new, healing patterns.
And, although it’s not acknowledged in the modern Western world, there are tried-and-true strategies, tools, and processes for this very purpose.
If you’re interested in learning how these timeless methods can help you, reach out and schedule a free 15 minute consultation call. It’s an opportunity to explore whether we’re a good fit for one another – there’s absolutely no pressure to book a session afterwards.
That’s it for this week!
Energetically,
David
